2) I do not fit any where. Black kids do not believe me when I say I’m black and at the mosque when it’s time to pray sisters slide their feet away from mine
3) people will tell me Black people can not be Muslim
And stare at my scarf as if it were a noose4) “so what kind of black are you”?
5) even here I am still not considered beautiful , my skin is too dark, my hips are too wide, lips too big
6) I am always being told I look like someone else. I can never be me I have to be associated with acceptable black people
7) i am 6 years old trying to scrub the black off
8) It is after jummah and a little girl looks me In the eyes and says I’m sorry god made you so dark
9) it is 3am and my body has given up on it self I’ve broken all the mirrors my confidence and faith has become the glass on my bathroom floor I can confirm we all bleed red
10) We step on to the Q train A lady looks at my cousins and I Her daughter is in a stroller And says Mommy look its the crazy people we see on tv
11) I was walking down the hallway and a girl comes up to me and asks me of I’m muslim I say yes She says no you’re black you can’t be muslim And pulls my scarf off Why is my identity something somebody else determines All my life I’ve either been to muslim or too black or too smart to fit In any where
12) the times
I hated my skin
I walked past the masjid when it was time to pray because I was so sad about how lonely I could feel next to someone
When my carpet was stained cherry red13) there will be times when you will ask God why. Don’t worry God answers.
